Liz 'The Poker Diva' Lieu
Liz Lieu Biography Born on August 2, 1974 in Vietnam, her parents brought the family to America a year later. Liz was raised in Colorado with her older sister, where her parents worked hard to provide a good life for their girls. At the age of 13, Liz was playing Chinese poker with friends and began a long love affair with the cards. She started her own home game when she was 18 with a friend, where they spread hold'em and pai gow tiles in what was to become a lucrative albeit short-term business. When her father had a heart attack, Liz's entrepreneurial spirit kicked in, and she told her parents to quit their jobs and enjoy the rest of their lives. She stepped up her game and began providing for them, which is what she has done ever since. Liz took her $80-$160 game and a sizable bankroll to Vegas and became a professional poker player. Just as she began moving up in limits, however, she ran into some personal obstacles that caused her to nearly go broke and begin all over again. With the help of her best friend, John Phan, she found the confidence and strength to rebuild her bankroll, focus completely on her game, and was soon climbing the ladder of success. She now plays regularly at the $400-$800 limits, in addition to tournaments all over the world. Liz now has homes in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and she supports her mother residing in Los Angeles and her father living in Vietnam. When not playing poker, she enjoys shopping, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. Liz's Poker Life Nicknamed the Poker Diva by fellow poker players because of her flair for style, Liz has developed quite a unique image at the tables. Her petite frame and fashionable appearance may be deceiving because when the cards are dealt, her aggressive style, serious demeanor, and killer instincts take over. She is a competitor at heart, and she will just as easily take your chips as share a laugh with you when the game is over. Though Liz has excelled at limit hold'em cash games for a number of years, she didn't embrace tournament play until the 2005 World Series of Poker. When John Phan encouraged her to enter the $1500 no-limit hold'em event, she ended up in fifth place with over $168,000 in prize money. She went on to place 12th in the $5000 no-limit hold'em event the same year and cashed in the $3000 tournament as well. The next stop was the Bellagio's 2005 Festa Al Lago tournament, where Liz placed fourth in the $2500 no limit hold'em event and 16th in two other top tournaments in the series, taking home more than $80,000 for less than a week's worth of work. She went on to finish in the top ten spots at the World Poker Finals, Five Diamond World Poker Classic, and the Gold Strike World Poker Open. Her first tournament win came at the 2006 L.A. Poker Classic at Commerce Casino, where she won the $1000 limit hold'em event. The tournament finishes continue to add to her resume, especially considering that she has earned over $375,000 in less than two years of tournament play and currently ranks as the 22nd all-time female money-earner in poker history. In 2006, Liz was honored by the WSOP and ESPN as a Final Table Grand Marshall along with Johnny Chan. In the introduction by Nolan Dalla, she was referred to as the next likely woman to win a WSOP bracelet. Most recently, Liz returned to the L.A. Poker Classic in February of 2007 and played in the $1000 no-limit hold?em tournament with 450 other players where the first prize was over $148,000. She emerged victorious with the first place trophy and a pledge ? as always ? to donate 20% of her winnings to charity. Achieving limit and no-limit hold?em titles in the course of only one year, she has shown her versatility at the tables and range of poker ability. Liz recently signed on with an international agent, Stephen Pearson, at Sports Media Gaming Ltd. to take her career to a new level. As poker becomes a global sport, Liz and Stephen share a vision of endorsement deals and partnerships worldwide but especially in the burgeoning markets of Europe and Asia. As they develop her commercial and public relations, she will be associated with gaming as well as non-gaming brands on a global scale. After gracing the covers of several magazines in 2006, including Deal and American Poker Player, Liz is scheduled to add Total Poker, Poker Player, Flush, and Woman Poker Player to the list in the first few months of 2007. She also received national exposure through several mainstream newspapers in Singapore during her participation in the BetFair Asian Poker Tour events. Her breakthrough to conventional media has made her a prominent personality and representative of poker throughout the world. Respected by her peers, poker fans and the media, Liz is a proud ambassador of poker and looks forward to an extensive and positive future in the sports/gaming industry.
