Courtney Friel
Courtney Friel Biography I would be nowhere in my career without the love and support of my mom, dad and two sisters therefore, the first picture in my virtual biography is dedicated to them. I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs with the dream of being on TV (the initial goal was weather girl, but it's changed over the years). Many hours were spent in my school's TV studio producing shows (I really thought I was Jane Pauley) and harassing my family, friends and teachers to film me or let me interview them. I got headshots and starred in an MTV commercial for Love's Baby Soft perfume but my big high school opportunity occurred when the network of kid TV came calling. I had been chosen to be an anchor on the Channel One News program seen in schools across the country. This experience gave me my first taste of LA and the news business - I was hooked. I went to my first year of college at Elon University, where I gained some local cable experience and um, apparently the freshman 15. But there were only so many hard-hitting journalism stories I could investigate there such as the opening of the school library and covering Greek events, (for the record- I am not in a sorority- and never was a cheerleader either) so I moved to Los Angeles. I got an internship at MTV News and a freelance reporter gig for the show "Trackers" on the Oxygen channel. Some of my stories included skydiving, going undercover for fake ids, and interviewing celebrities on the red carpet. I finished up college with a BA in Political Science from San Diego State University and interned at the local NBC (KNSD). This is where I learned the intern secret- buy the photographers beer to entice them to shoot your standups and edit packages .I ended up with a fabulous resume tape! Unlike most anchor wannabees, I was willing to leave my friends and family and move to the middle of nowhere to gain experience and credibility. I specifically remember sending out one tape thinking, "I really hope this random place doesn't call me." Well WBBJ did, and I was off to the ABC affiliate in Jackson no, not the metropolis of Jackson Mississippi, but Jackson, Tennessee. Competing with the illustrious wages equal to a fast food worker, I was hired as an anchor and reporter (code name for one-woman band). My duties included hauling my body weight in camera equipment to shooting, editing, and writing my own stories. I even rolled the teleprompter pedal with my right foot while anchoring the 10pm news! And it gets better my first day of live television began at 4am with a deadly tornado that leveled the town and also totaled my car! The next stop in local news...Palm Springs, CA, where I reported and anchored at the CBS affiliate there. Moving back to Los Angeles gave me the chance to cover a variety of subjects... Poker, hosting the "World Poker Tour" on the Travel Channel. Crime, as a correspondent for "America's Most Wanted" on FOX and "The Saturday Night Solution" on COURT TV. Entertainment reporting for E! News Entertainment Television, "Extra" on NBC, VH1, and ET Canada. Videogames for GameStop/EBTV, and G4. News, Sports and Music at GOTV Mobile Television. Movies, hosting shows for Loews Theaters, Comcast Cable, and Nickelodeon. I'm a hard worker and love all aspects of the TV business. Now I'm back on the East Coast working for Fox News Channel in NYC, living with my Husband -CBS News reporter Carter Evans, and my fat cat Tucker.
Courtney Friel Poker Blog/Articles 06/07/07 ~ Just got back from Vegas covering the Killers Concert and HardRock Hotel festivities! Was on "Red Eye" again. It was a great time covering the American Idol Finale as well- Rock on Jordin...she was my favorite! It's been almost 4 months since I moved to New York City and started working for Fox News. The big apple is AMAZING and I've had a chance to contribute and report for many different shows on the channel. Most recently I was a guest on "Red Eye" and covered Idol Gives Back from LA on "Fox & Friends." Getting an invite to the White House Correspondents dinner was such an honor. Mingling with celebs, politicians and journalists all at once=Great Time! I talked with Mitt Romney about his YouTube page! Also shot at a Mets game...they were playing the Phillies- my home team, so as you can see I was being fair and balanced, but the crowd didn't really dig my hat. I've been getting a lot of emails as to when I am on the channel...that is a great question! It always varies, but I usually make a cameo during the weekdays on shows like "Studio B with Shepard Smith," "The Live Desk with Martha McCallum," "Fox News Live," "Cavuto," "The Big Story with John Gibson," and "Hannity & Colmes." I help out wherever they need it! So what's next? I'm on the May cover of Steppin' Out Magazine. I'll be back in LA for the American Idol finale...hanging with Simon. Also check out the YouTube channel FoxNewsBlast. It's crazy video and I host the "Best of the Blast!" How lucky am I that I got to cover the Kentucky Derby last minute...and wear a ridiculous hat that almost knocked out my co-host for the day, Rick Leventhal. Good times...go Street Sense!
