When the nicknames for poker players are handed out again, it would be no surprise if “Goldilocks” was the label given to the petite Spaniard who was making waves at the World Poker Tour recently. Cecilia Reyes Mortensen, along with her long, curly, golden locks of hair, was taking no prisoners as she seemed to team up with actress and poker maven Jennifer Tilley in bluffing and bullying the other four women at the table.

She ended up with a fourth place finish (and Tilley went on to snag the win) and she had to plow her way through over 600 women in order to qualify for the event. She, along with the other five women at the table, made up what was an unintentional theme this year; poker playing spouses and girlfriends of the pros. Everyone at the table was either married to or dating a well known male poker star, but there was no doubt in watching the play that these women were skilled pros in their own right.

Cecilia, hailing from Madrid, Spain, won a $300 limit Hold’em event at Tunica, one of the first indicators that she was well on her way towards the upper ranks of poker players. Sometimes playing under the name Reyes, which is her maiden name, Cecilia always heeds the lessons Juan Carlos taught her about varying play, switching up her style depending on who her opponent is and how they play.

At the table with Tilley and Mortensen were no push-overs; the former champion, Isabelle Mercier, was the terror of last year and no slouch herself, as her nickname “No Mercy” indicates. She seemed to be quickly put off by the aggressive play of Cecilia, which showed her opponents right away she was a force to be contended with, regardless of her junior-pro status.

When Cecelia Mortensen isn’t competing in the WPT or the WSOP she can be seen cheering on her husband, who is a 2001 World Champion, who, along with Cecilia, employs a very aggressive, fearless style of play. When quizzed on her rising star and how she is becoming so successful, her reply should be immortalized as the lesson for all poker players the world over:” I have passion and patience.”
